The Grand Old Stately Homes of England

              Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park

If you are touring England, are visiting from abroad, or are simply a UK resident looking for a great day out, a visit to one, or two, England's fine old stately homes and gardens may be just what you need. The amount of  places to visit is vast, varied and all over the country. There is a wealth of History and Art to enjoy from centuries ago although many houses now have a modern twist, often in the gardens or their programme of events. If you plan your visit wel,l by researching the area you will be visiting, you may find that there are many Stately Homes and Gardens in quite a small area. Here is a little information taken from the internet:-

"North Americans and overseas visitors please take note : Many of these houses are only open afternoons. Why? Often because they are still family homes, or, as a means to preserve the sensitive contents from too much traffic and exposure to light".

This may mean that a possible favourite of yours may not be easy to visit due to restricted opening hours. It is always best to phone ahead or check with a local tourist information centre for exact opening times and programme of events.

Hi Ethel, What a helpful site! I sure could have used this about a year ago when we planned our trip to England. These homes are so beautiful. I know they are prohibitively expensive to maintain but I hope many will continue to do so-- they are jewels dotting the British landscape (along with the sheep) :-) Abby

Knebworth

Knebworth house is one of those country estates that has adapted to live in the 21st Century very successfully. As the picture below shows it is a fine old building with lovely gardens.

As The Hon. Henry Lytton Cobbold states:-

"Queen Elizabeth I, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Mick Jagger... since my family, the Lyttons, came to Knebworth in 1490, nineteen generations ago, our home has entertained an extraordinary range of guests from all walks of life.

So close to London, and yet nestled in the rolling hills of the English Countryside, Knebworth House is the perfect place for entertaining colleagues, friends, family, loved ones - whether you have just one, or three hundred and seventy-five thousand, as Robbie Williams did!

My wife Martha and I very much hope you will add your name to our illustrious Guest Book and experience some of the magic of this beautiful, historic place. As my great-great-great-grandfather, Edward Bulwer Lytton, painted on the walls on our banqueting hall:

"Welcome... to our hearth, where rooted friendships grow."
The Hon. Henry Lytton Cobbold"

It is possible to book part of Knebworth for a conference, meeting or wedding. The programme of events is diverse and this year sees Metallica headlining. Therefore:-

Knebworth House, Gardens, and Park
will be closed to day visitors on 31st July,
1st August, 2nd August & 3rd August.
