The Holiday Club

Your one stop zone for all things vacation.

The WorldWhether your vacation is to be a round the world cruise or a short journey to a cheap and cheerful nearby coastal resort it will be special to you. If you are not well travelled your vacation could be that bit extra special and exciting. For me, holidays or vacations promise the chance to experience the new and unusual, whilst having a relaxing time. For you the requirements may be different.

The continuing Global financial crisis means that many people are putting vacations on the back burner. If you can afford even a brief vacation, it should be worth every cent or penny.

However, if you cannot afford to travel at all this year, why not sit back, relax and enjoy a virtual trip around the world with The Holiday Club.

If you are planning your vacation you could find all the advice you need below.

BON VOYAGE.

Reflections

As children our holidays consisted of day trips to local seaside resorts or a week long stay in a caravan at Withernsea, a nearby resort. I say caravan, but our accommodation was actually a converted railway carriage which was great fun for us kids. The chemical toilet though was no fun no matter what age you were.

Adult holidays started with my first holiday without parents, when I and three friends visited Helston, in Cornwall. Once married Hubby and I never seemed to be able to afford more than the occasional caravan holiday, camping near Weston-Super-Mare, a weekend break at Whitby or days out to places like Scarborough and York. The caravan was slightly better than the railway carriage but only just.

Finally in 1989 we managed to get ourselves abroad. A five day touring holiday to Austria and Switzerland. It may have only been five days, but what five days they were. Travelling by coach was tiring but the views were spectacular.

This led us on to bigger and better and we eventually took our first flight when we visited Malta in 1991. We may have been late starters but that just made everything so much more exciting. Like children in a candy store we loved every minute. Holidays have been at a bit of a premium for us in the last couple of years but along the way we have managed to visit, Malta, Austria, Switzerland, Crete, Rhodes, Lefkas, Cyprus, Thassos, Cornwall, The Algarve, The Island of Madeira and Zante, with brief visits to Sicily, Seville, Gibraltar and Lichtenstein. We soon became hooked on travelling and hopefully there will be more adventures to come.

Successful holidays though are about more than exotic destinations and spending huge amounts of money. They need good company, wonderful surroundings, good weather, fun and the right spirit. That said the best holiday you ever had could be in your own back yard.

Happy holidays.

THE ISLAND OF MADEIRA

This is the statue of Christ at Garajou, on the Island of Madeira. Although this statue is not as large as the one in South America, or its larger version in Lisbon, Portugal, it is still impressive. When we visited there was quite a walk from the town of Garajou to find it. The journey back was up a steep road that the locals had jokingly called Angina Hill. As the tourists huffed and puffed their way back the cafe near the top had the glasses of ice cold lager beer ready. It made me realise that at that time I was fairly fit through my walking, as the hill was not a problem to me. With troublesome knees now, only two years later, it would be a different story.

Locals told us that as the island which was and I think still is catholic had many years earlier  thrown the bodies of protestants from the cliffs here rather than bury them on the island.
