Your cruise ship has just docked for the day at one of its ports of call.  The stairwells are already crammed with people waiting to disembark. But before you join the morning's crush, you might want consider the benefits of staying on board to enjoy your floating resort.

Novice cruisers often book excursions at every port of call, trying to squeeze as many adventures into the day as possible.  But once you've taken several cruises, it's going to dawn on you that the shipboard experience can be one of the biggest highlights of your entire vacation.  Staying onboard your cruise ship during a day in port can be the best time to take advantage of all that it has to offer.  With fewer people and a more relaxed atmosphere, it's the perfect day to treat yourself to the shipboard services that will leave you feeling pampered and indulged.

Did you stay onboard?  Great! Here are some steps to guarantee that you will have a fantastic day aboard your cruise ship.

Instructions
Step 1
Ready for breakfast? Order in.

Begin your luxurious day on board your cruise ship by contacting your concierge and having breakfast delivered to you on your veranda.  Whether you sip your coffee while people watching, or read the most recent edition of your shipboard news, there's just nothing like a lazy morning, and a ringside seat to the harbour entertainment.  So grab your camera and catch those cute little seals in the act!

Step 2
Book a massage for after lunch.

When you've finished your breakfast, head on over to the ship's spa and take advantage of the discounted services that are only available when the ship is in port.  Definitely book a massage and you might want to get a facial while you're at it. Be sure to schedule early so you can pick the time you want.

Step 3
Catch some sun and a swim on the pool deck.

You'll be amazed at the number of lounge chairs that are vacant around the pool area during a port day.  Pull one around to face into the sun and lay back and relax.  You're going to catch some serious rays now.  I hope you've put on the sun screen. Getting a little too warm?  Dive into the pool for a cool off and take a swim. Enjoy the quiet in the pool area.  This is one of the major benefits of staying onboard on a port day.

Step 4
Connect with friends or family in the internet cafe.

Almost everyone likes to stay in touch with family and friends while aboard a cruise.  Unfortunately, the internet cafe is often one of the busiest places on board.  But today, you're sure to find an empty terminal.  So go ahead. Log in and send all those "wish you were here" messages that are sure to make everyone back home green with envy.

Step 5
Go get that massage

Since you lingered a bit over your breakfast, a quick burger on the pool deck might be just the ticket. Then go get that massage that you scheduled this morning.  After a couple of hours in the sun, the spa is a perfect place to replenish your skin. Hope you booked the facial, as well. You won't believe how great that mask will feel on your sun-kissed face.

Step 6
Choose an afternoon activity that you would not normally take the time to do.

You still have a couple of hours before your shipmates begin arriving back on board so there's time for choosing an activity that you might not normally make the time for.

Wants some ideas?  How about taking a behind the scene's tour of the kitchen galley?  Maybe you'd rather browse the art gallery.Just remember that purchases cannot be made while in port, so while you can look, you can't buy until your ship is in open water.

If none of the remaining port day activities interests you, consider a nap. Taking a snooze aboard a cruise can be a wonderful idea.  With all that sea air, you are sure to sleep like a baby. Just don't snooze through dinner!

By the time your shipmates arrive back on deck, hot, tired, and hungry, you'll be looking and feeling your best.  It's been an awesome day. and it's not over yet. Now go put on your evening clothes and your dancing shoes and head to the night clubs. When your head finally hits your pillow for the night, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you've learned the secret to enjoying your cruise ship on a day in port.
